ABUNDANT RESOURCES

Kansas is a better place to conduct the business of bioscience in particular because of the passage of the Kansas Economic Growth Act, which creates an anticipated $580 million fund to fuel the bioscience economy and the formation of the Kansas Bioscience Authority, to manage the distribution of those funds. This bold initiative represents one of the most progressive in the nation and already is stimulating the state's bioscience economy.

Working together with partners and local communities, Kansas and the Bioscience Authority will invest in people, projects and program that will accelerate the growth of the bioscience industry and make Kansas a center for bio science research, innovation, and commercialization.

Kansas has a proven track record of bringing big, visionary ideas to life - on budget and on time. These initiatives have already encouraged the development of assets that are important to the success of NBAF in Kansas. They include:
  • Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., is nationally recognized for its expertise and programs in zoonotic, emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, and livestock medicine.
  • Kansas State's Biosecurity Research InstituteKansas State's Biosecurity Research Institute, along with the newly built National Agricultural Biosecurity Center, is the nation's most modern BSL-3 agricultural facility.

  • Animal Health CorridorThe Kansas City region is recognized for its reputation as the animal health "epicenter" of the world. The Animal Health Corridor, stretching from Columbia, Mo., to Manhattan, Kan., includes more than 120 animal health organizations (37 of which are global leaders) and employees more than 13,000 specialists.
  • Kansas has an exceptional student population and educated work force, thanks to five major universities with animal science and/or veterinary programs within a 300-mile radius.
  • With the completion of the BSL-3 facility at Manhattan, Kan., solidified its reputation for being able to build large-scale Federal facilities on time and on budget.
  • Kansas' elected officials and local community leaders understand, accept, and value the importance of this type of research for the state and nation.
